A bright yet gentle yellow, perfect for painting nature and all vegetation (foliage, grass, flowers, fruits, etc.). It’s transparent and saturated, which makes it a great mixing color - it will not overpower other colors. Kron Yellow is an interesting color to try if you are looking for more nuance in your yellow mixes and don’t want to use too strong or opaque colors.
Kron Yellow is a historic pigment that has been used since the early 19th century. It was manufactured for artists since about 1810 and had several commercial names, including Paris Yellow, Kron Gelb, and Cologne Yellow. It became popular among artists in the 1830s-1850s. English artist J.M.W. Turner, the painter of light, used it in his landscapes. The peak popularity of Kron Yellow was in the late 19th century, aligning with the peak of post-impressionism and impressionism art movements. It was one of the key new pigments in every bright and luminous palette at that time. Artists like Monet, Pissarro, Manet, Renoir, and Cezanne used it to paint bright outdoor light, landscapes, and various light effects in portraits and still lives. The famous “Sunflowers” by Van Gogh were painted with Kron Yellow! In one of his letters, he mentioned that many of his sunflowers were painted with “the three chrome yellows, yellow ochre, and Veronese green and nothing else.”
