Sankir Ocher

$9.00

Sankir Ocher is a very special pigment with a long history. It was traditionally used in painting Byzantine icons as a base layer for flesh tones and hair. The religious icons were traditionally painted with egg tempera using multiple transparent layers. Sankir was the first and the darkest layer for both practical and symbolic reasons. Transparent layers were painted from dark to light, which allowed to gradually build values and create the effect of luminosity and dimension, as well as symbolize the journey from darkness to light (i.e. from earthly darkness towards divine and spiritual light). Sankir Ocher is not very dark or intense, it’s transparent and delicate with olive green undertones.
