Sargent was trained to paint like the grand old masters and was friends with French post-impressionists who embraced bright pure colors and outdoor (plein air) painting. Sargent made much money painting rich people's portraits and traveled extensively. He always brought his watercolors and painted everywhere he went.

My favorite anecdote about Sargent's watercolor painting is about the time when he traveled with his friends and the group was delayed at a rural train station. They were standing on a platform when they saw a cow roaming in a nearby field. The train was due to arrive in about half an hour and Sargent unpacked his watercolor paints and easel and went into the field to paint the cow. This shows how passionate he was about painting and how eager he was to look for interesting subjects and capture them in his artworks.

Sargent painted over 2000 watercolors in his lifetime! Unlike his oil paintings, dark and grand, Sargent's watercolors are transparent, light, and almost abstract. Sargent used watercolors to quickly capture scenes and to convey light. Watercolors allowed Sargent more creative freedom than his commissioned oil works and became his medium for artistic exploration and experiments.

In his early years, Sargent used watercolors as travel sketching medium and was not as serious about them as he was about oil. In 1909 he exhibited his watercolor art for the first time in the Brooklyn Museum (New York) and it was a huge success. The museum purchased all 83 watecolor paintings from that exhibition (many of them are still part of the permanent collection). His next watercolor exhibition was in 1912, at the Knoedler Gallery (New York) and majority of the artworks were purchased by the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. After that, Sargent became known as a master watercolorist, in addition to his fame as an oil portrait artist.

Personal painting experience: Reading about and researching Sargent's artworks and paint palettes (both oil and watercolor), I began to appreciate his approach to blending and applying colors. Sargent's watercolor palette is mostly cool with a few strong warm colors. It is quite versatile and its colors can be recognized in all of his watercolor paintings: landscapes, seascapes, and cityscapes painted all over the world. The palette is quite refined, i.e. there are no redundant colors. Each color is clean and bright. I am a big admirer of practical limited palettes and this is a good example of one. Dürer was a successful artist and entrepreneur and he traveled around Europe to meet with patrons, to study art (e.g. in Italy), and to sell his engravings and prints. Dürer was the first artist who made his drawings available to the general public. He used the woodblock printing method to replicate his drawings for sale at markets. Although he was patronized and sponsored by Emperor Maximilian I, he understood that to gain popularity and to be recognized, more people need to see and own his works. One woodblock could produce around 12 000 prints and Dürer created over 300 different woodcuts during his career. Average people were buying his prints (mostly with religious themes) to decorate their dwellings (a new trend at that time). Dürer had the financial ability and mobility to seek and try the best pigments available at the time. The most expensive one was Ultramarine (bright blue Azurite only used to paint the Virgin Mary’s clothes). Dürer bought it during his trips around Europe and used it for the paintings he did for the Emperor and other wealthy patrons. In the 1500s, one ounce of ultramarine cost 12 florins or 30 grams of gold. If we convert the cost of Renaissance ultramarine to a modern dollar value using the cost of gold (rate is $57.59 per 1 gram today), we get $1,727.70 per one ounce (28 grams) of pure Ultramarine. There is a record of Dürer asking his patron to pay a higher price for a painting because he used Ultramarine to paint it. Further cultural decline of Spain and political turmoil before and during the reign of King Ferdinand VII, as well as witnessing brutalities during the war with Napoleon contributed to Goya’s declining mental health. Although he continued to paint for the rich and noble people of Spain, his personal art turned to dark and disturbing subjects. He created a series of etchings called “Los Caprichos” that reveal the tragic, comic, and disturbing elements of culture at that time (one of the most famous ones is “The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters”).

At the age of 75, Goya lived in the outskirts of Madrid. His father, a banker, wanted Cezanne to join banking, but he refused. Cezanne was a focused and meticulous man who wanted to become an artist. He studied fundamentals in his teen years and then had various mentors (including Camille Pissaro!) who helped him find his voice. He independently studied geometry, color theory, and other sciences that informed his style. Cezanne applied to study in the prestigious art school in Paris but was rejected due to his unconventional art style and lack of “polished” academic work.

Cezanne’s close childhood friend was Emile Zola, a famous author who reached the peak of his popularity in his late 20s. When they were in their 40s, Zola wrote a novel called “The Masterpiece”. It was about two friends - an artist and a novelist. In the novel, the artist works very hard but fails repeatedly until he burns out, falls into complete despair, and takes his own life, while the novelist becomes successful and famous due to his more wise and pragmatic approach to creativity. Cezanne read the manuscript and saw the artist’s character as a critical portrait of himself. After reading the novel, he never spoke with Zola again.

Shortly after the publication of the novel, Cezanne moved to a small town in the south of France and became a recluse. He painted outdoors obsessively, sometimes painting in the mountains for days. Locals described him as eccentric. One anecdote from that period is that when passers-by tried to approach him to see his easel or chat, he would shout at them and chase them away because they disturbed his focus. I guess, for that same reason, Cezanne never joined an art commune or group plein air that were popular with Impressionists at that time. He once joined Monet to paint outdoors, but couldn’t paint with him. Monet painted quickly and captured fleeting effects of light, and wasn’t concerned with meticulous underdrawing, while Cezanne’s approach was more methodical and less spontaneous. The two were complete opposites in their approach to plein air painting.

Cezanne continued to spend the majority of his life in a small town where he built a studio. It was manufactured for artists since about 1810 and had several commercial names, including Paris Yellow, Kron Gelb, and Cologne Yellow. It became popular among artists in the 1830s-1850s. English artist J.M.W. Turner, the painter of light, used it in his landscapes. The peak popularity of Kron Yellow was in the late 19th century, aligning with the peak of post-impressionism and impressionism art movements. It was one of the key new pigments in every bright and luminous palette at that time. Artists like Monet, Pissarro, Manet, Renoir, and Cezanne used it to paint bright outdoor light, landscapes, and various light effects in portraits and still lives. The famous “Sunflowers” by Van Gogh were painted with Kron Yellow!
